EU Sanctions IRGC Navy Unit Over Strait of Hormuz Toll System
The European Union imposed sanctions on two Iranian individuals and one Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy unit over alleged efforts to restrict freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The sanctions target the Hormozgan Provincial Command of the IRGC Navy, Mohammad Akbarzadeh, and Hamid Hosseini for operating a toll system requiring vessels to submit identifying documents, cargo details and destination information. The move follows the U.S. Treasury's May designation of Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority, bringing the EU sanctions regime to 26 individuals and 27 entities.
