Panama Canal Preventive Maintenance: Guaranteeing Safety and Competitiveness
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) implements a permanent preventive maintenance program to ensure the operational reliability of the interoceanic waterway. Interventions include work on locks, dredging, conservation of floating equipment, and infrastructure modernization. A recent example was the dry chamber intervention in Pedro Miguel, executed in five days in May with 300 collaborators. The ACP is studying the feasibility of expanding the Neopanamax locks to handle vessels up to 53 meters wide, compared to the current 51.25 meters.
