South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean received Approval in Principle (AiP) from ABS for a standardized floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit design, intended for use across multiple projects. According to a company statement, the platform-based design seeks to shorten front-end engineering work and make project execution more predictable.
Technical Review
ABS completed the design review based on applicable classification requirements and industry standards. With this standardized approach, Hanwha Ocean expects to reduce engineering timelines and streamline execution on its future FLNG projects.
ABS Statements
Matt Tremblay, ABS Senior Vice President of Global Markets, noted that standardized designs have the potential to improve consistency and predictability in the development of complex FLNG projects, and stated that the organization is proud to support Hanwha Ocean in advancing a platform-based approach to optimize project engineering and execution.
FPSO Background
Sources recall that ABS had previously completed a basic design review for a standardized floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit developed by Hanwha Ocean for the deepwater markets of South America and West Africa, along with related sustainability reviews for that same design.
