AmaWaterways announced the launch of a six-day trip to Machu Picchu, Peru, which will be offered as a post-cruise extension starting in April 2027. The experience will combine hotel stays, train journeys, private tours and cultural activities, and will initially be available on select sailings of the 'Magic of Colombia' itinerary. Starting in 2028, the land extension will be added to all sailings of that cruise.
Journey from Cartagena to Machu Picchu
After disembarking in Cartagena, Colombia, passengers will fly to Lima, with airfare included in the package. There they will tour the Miraflores and Barranco neighborhoods before continuing on to Cusco and the Sacred Valley, culminating in a private, guided visit to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. The itinerary also includes stops in Ollantaytambo, the Maras salt pans, the Moray agricultural terraces, the historic center of Cusco, the Koricancha temple and the Sacsayhuamán fortress.
Luxury Train and Accommodation Options
The centerpiece of the experience is the train journey to Machu Picchu, which travelers can take aboard the Hiram Bingham, a Belmond train, or the Inca Rail first-class service, always accompanied by a local guide. For accommodations, AmaWaterways offers two alternatives: the Boutique option, with stays at The Westin Lima Hotel & Convention Center, Tambo del Inka (A Luxury Collection Resort & Spa) and Palacio del Inka (A Luxury Collection Hotel); and the Iconic option, with the Belmond Miraflores Park hotel in Lima and the Monasterio hotel in Cusco.
The Company's Perspective
Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways, noted that Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic sites in the world and that adding this curated experience reflects the company's evolution in luxury river cruising. Powell added that the company aims to create extraordinary experiences from start to finish, tied not only to the destination but also to how travelers get there, where they stay, and what they experience along the way. According to Cruise Mapper, this extension marks AmaWaterways' first dedicated land journey to Peru and is part of its strategy to expand destination-focused experiences beyond its river cruises.
