APM Terminals Callao, operator of the Multipurpose North Terminal at the Port of Callao, will invest US$231 million in the construction of Berth 5C, a 440-meter-long, 16-meter-deep berth designed to receive large vessels with capacity exceeding 20,000 TEU. Completion of the project is scheduled for January 2028.
More Capacity for the North Terminal
With the addition of the new berth, the North Terminal will be able to handle up to 1.7 million TEU per year, with the possibility of expanding that capacity to 2.2 million. The expansion aims to keep pace with the growth of Peruvian imports and exports and to create better maritime connectivity conditions for the country.
Cold Chain for Agricultural Exports
Among the components of the investment is a 25% increase in power connections for refrigerated containers, reaching 2,000 points, which will enable the terminal to handle larger volumes of perishable goods linked to Peru's agro-export sector, which reached a record US$15.013 billion in 2025 according to company data.
Equipment and Ministerial Visit
The project also includes the addition of MalaccaMax cranes, specialized container-handling equipment, and a charging station for electric machinery. Currently, cargo moved through the North Terminal reaches more than 70 countries and 220 destinations, and the terminal has a direct connection between Asia and Peru with a 23-day transit time. The Minister of Transportation and Communications, José Angello Tangherlini, visited APM Terminals Callao's facilities to learn about these projects and stated that the initiative will help strengthen the North Terminal's operational capacity. During the visit, actions were also coordinated for the Maritime Humanitarian Corridor, aimed at transporting modular bridges and essential goods to the south of the country, including the Ilo area, in anticipation of possible effects from the El Niño phenomenon.
Part of a US$570 Million Phase
Berth 5C is part of Phase 3B of the North Terminal's modernization, which will be carried out in two stages over four years with a total investment of approximately US$570 million. According to Salvador Barrios, Commercial Director of APM Terminals Callao, this phase will expand annual capacity from 1.3 million to 1.75 million containers and from 13.5 million to 18 million tons of general cargo, while the second stage, scheduled between 2028 and 2030, will add three new berths for general cargo operations.
