The Governing Council of Brazil's Fundo da Marinha Mercante (FMM) approved, during its 64th meeting held on Thursday, October 8, four projects totaling R$953.2 million (US$189.59 million) for the construction of 13 vessels in the state of Bahia. The initiatives have the potential to generate 750 direct jobs and will be carried out at the Belov Offshore Industrial shipyard, located in Simões Filho, in the metropolitan region of Salvador.
Pushboats for mineral transport
The largest amount approved, R$402.7 million (US$80.10 million), corresponds to a project by LHG Logística for the construction of four river pushboats, expected to create 300 direct jobs, with a four-year execution period. These vessels will transport minerals along the Paraguay and Paraná rivers, between Corumbá, in Mato Grosso do Sul, and Nueva Palmira, in Uruguay, where the cargo will be transferred to ocean-going vessels for export.
Harbor tugboats from SAAM Towage
SAAM Towage Brasil secured approval for two projects totaling R$343.85 million (US$68.39 million) for the construction of six harbor tugboats, expected to generate 300 direct jobs. One of the projects covers four tugboats with an investment of R$223.35 million and a 36-month execution period, while the other allocates R$120.5 million for two vessels with lower carbon dioxide emission engines, to be built within up to 18 months. These units are used in berthing and unberthing maneuvers, although the projects do not specify which ports they will operate in.
Barges from Belov Engenharia
Belov Engenharia received approval for a project worth R$206.7 million (US$41.10 million) to build three vessels aimed at expanding its fleet, expected to create 150 direct jobs, with a 20-month execution period. The plan includes two 60-meter barges for general cargo transport and marine support, as well as a self-elevating (jack-up) barge for offshore operations, without specifying where these units will operate.
By concentrating activity at the Belov Offshore Industrial shipyard in Simões Filho, the projects aim to strengthen the shipbuilding industrial base in Brazil's Northeast. In addition to the direct jobs anticipated, the initiatives could stimulate hiring among suppliers and services linked to the region's shipbuilding production chain.
