Brazil's Minister of Ports and Airports, Tomé Franca, visited Manaus this Thursday, October 22, to take part in the groundbreaking for the modernization and expansion works at the Terminal Hidroviário Manaus Moderna, marked by the driving of the first pile of the new structure. The minister's agenda also included a visit to the Estaleiro Juruá, in Iranduba, and to the ongoing works at the Manaus International Airport.
Project details
The project, under the responsibility of Brazil's National Department of Transport Infrastructure (Dnit), calls for the installation of 1,400 piles to support a 40,000-square-meter platform, aiming to transform one of Manaus's main waterway connection points. According to accounts given during the event, this is a project that local residents dependent on river transport have been awaiting for more than 25 years.
Passenger amenities
The new terminal will feature air-conditioned waiting and service areas, a playground, communal spaces with concrete benches, and a covered parking area equipped with solar panels. The project also includes a basic health unit, bicycle parking, solar power generation, and wastewater treatment, all designed to improve accessibility for people with disabilities or reduced mobility.
Timeline and statements
The works are expected to be completed within 24 months. Minister Tomé Franca highlighted that political commitment and the allocation of funding made it possible to move from the project stage to actual execution, while Dnit's Director of Waterway Infrastructure, Edme Filho, noted that the project will benefit not only Amazonas but also the states of Acre, Roraima, and Rondônia.
Visit to the Estaleiro Juruá
During his stop in Iranduba, Franca toured the Estaleiro Juruá, a shipyard dedicated to shipbuilding and to the production of waterway infrastructure structures such as barges, river pushboats, and port terminals, which generates around 3,100 direct jobs in the region.
