Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) confirmed a new outbreak of Newcastle disease at a poultry farm in Coronel Freitas, in the state of Santa Catarina. The facility, which raises turkeys, is located within the sanitary restriction zone established following the first confirmed case on October 18.
Following the detection, the affected farm began the sanitary culling of birds to contain the spread of the virus, and authorities redefined the restriction perimeter while maintaining surveillance over the area. Since October 19, a 60-day animal health emergency has also been in effect for the municipalities of Nova Itaberaba, Águas Frias, Coronel Freitas and Nova Erechim, established under Portaria MAPA No. 962/2026.
Uruguay Suspends Purchases
Uruguay temporarily suspended imports of poultry meat and other poultry products from all of Brazil, as Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock informed exporters on Monday, October 26. The restriction covers animals susceptible to the disease as well as poultry products and by-products manufactured after September 6, according to an official memo updated on October 27.
Outbreak Count Rises to Four
During the 28th Regional Conference of the World Organisation for Animal Health for the Americas and a meeting of the Southern Agricultural Council, held in Asunción on November 2, Brazil reported that since the first case on October 18, three additional outbreaks had been confirmed in Santa Catarina, bringing the total to four. The most recent case was detected on Tuesday, November 3, at a poultry facility in Nova Erechim, also within an already established restriction zone. Measures implemented include restrictions on the movement of birds and poultry products, sanitary culling of flocks, cleaning and disinfection of facilities, and reinforced epidemiological surveillance.
Trade Reactions
According to MAPA, countries such as China, Japan, the European Union, the United Kingdom, South Korea and Mexico have already recognized some degree of regionalization of trade restrictions; in Mexico's case, the initial suspension covering all of Brazil was narrowed to Santa Catarina on October 30. Argentina and Bolivia limited their measures to the affected area, while Paraguay and Chile restricted their purchases to the state of Santa Catarina. Uruguay, by contrast, is maintaining the restriction at the national level, although Brazil has sent updated technical information at the request of Uruguayan authorities. Brazil has been the world's largest exporter of chicken meat since 2021 and exported 265,544 TEUs of this product between January and August, according to Datamar data.
