CMA CGM, Nike and Gemadept launched a fully electric barge in Vietnam designed to cut emissions from inland cargo transport. The vessel connects Nike's inland delivery point in Ho Chi Minh City with the Gemalink deep-water seaport terminal, operated by Gemadept in Cai Mep, covering a 180-kilometer round trip.
Renewable energy and cargo capacity
The barge runs on batteries from CATL, which are recharged in about four hours using certified renewable electricity generated by a solar plant developed at the Gemalink terminal itself. It is designed to carry more than 50,000 TEU per year and is expected to avoid close to 778 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, according to Ship Bunker, Port Technology and Portal Portuario.
A model for replication
The project was developed by CMA CGM's New Construction and R&D teams and combines the electric vessel with dedicated charging infrastructure and renewable power generation at Gemalink. The companies noted they will look to assess the possibility of replicating this model in other markets and adapting it to different customer supply chains.
Statements from the partners
Christine Cabau, Executive Vice President of Assets and Operations at CMA CGM, said decarbonizing global supply chains requires concrete, scalable solutions, and highlighted that the barge shows what can be achieved when carriers, customers and terminal operators combine their expertise. Cimarron Nix, Nike's Chief Sustainability Officer, noted that cutting emissions across a global supply chain demands new ideas and strong partnerships, while Do Cong Khanh, Deputy CEO of Gemadept Corporation and Chairman of Gemalink, stated that the future of sustainable logistics depends on greater connectivity between ports, inland waterways and clean energy.
CMA CGM's presence in Vietnam
CMA CGM has operated in Vietnam since 2006 and has five offices in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Haiphong, Da Nang and Quy Nhon, with more than 220 employees. The group runs 29 weekly scheduled services calling at seven ports across the country, connecting Vietnam with international destinations through an intermodal network integrated with CEVA Logistics.
