A consortium made up of Ultracargo, Stolthaven Terminals, Granel Química and Vopak signed a contract with the Santos Port Authority (APS) to build two new public berths in the Alemoa area, in the northwestern section of the Port of Santos. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the aim of expanding the operational capacity of the complex dedicated to handling fuels and chemical products.
Greater Capacity for Vessels
The new berths will be able to receive vessels of up to 70,000 deadweight tonnes (DWT), thanks to the planned deepening of the channel to 14 meters, which will enable roughly 17% more capacity than the current limit. According to the sources, this will allow more cargo to be carried per call and reduce the fragmentation of fuel and chemical shipping voyages.
Expected Operational Benefits
In addition to greater vessel capacity, the expansion is expected to speed up shore-side operations, improving tank turnaround and the productivity of the Alemoa complex. The consortium noted that the project represents an investment in strategic infrastructure for the country, aimed at preparing the port for future demand growth by increasing efficiency, safety and competitiveness.
Reduced Waiting Times
Among the expected benefits is a reduction in berthing waiting times, which can currently extend several days during periods of peak demand. The expansion should provide greater predictability and operational flexibility for the companies that rely on the complex to handle fuels and chemical products.
Additional Capacity and Construction Challenges
Together, the project's projected gains would add around 3 million tonnes per year to liquid bulk handling capacity in the area. The works will be carried out while the terminals remain fully operational, requiring careful planning and coordination to maintain safety and operational continuity, as the consortium moves forward in defining the engineering details and timeline of the project.
