DP World launched its first contract logistics operation for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) in Italy, with the opening of a 22,000-square-meter multi-client, temperature-controlled warehouse in Castel San Pietro Terme, near Bologna. The facility combines warehousing, transport, e-commerce order management and value-added logistics services, and is designed to serve customers in the food and beverage, e-commerce and consumer goods industries in Italy and across Europe.
Capacity and infrastructure
The center has approximately 30,000 pallet positions and temperature control ranging between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, with dedicated capabilities for handling organic products. The facility also has the capacity to onboard additional customers from the consumer goods and technology sectors, including premium and organic brands.
Partnership with Alce Nero
The operation was established through a partnership with Alce Nero, an Italian organic food company that serves as the facility's anchor customer. DP World will manage key parts of Alce Nero's logistics, including warehousing, e-commerce order fulfillment and transport. Renzo Patelli, general manager of Alce Nero, noted that finding the right logistics partner was an important process for the company given the complexity of its business model, which brings together different supply chains, members, partners and customers across multiple channels with specific logistics requirements and flows.
Statements from DP World
Rainer Schmid, chief commercial officer of DP World Europe, described the launch of this first FMCG contract logistics operation in Italy as an important milestone for the company, as it represents a key European market that, according to the executive, strengthens DP World's network and opens new opportunities in the food and beverage sector. Schmid added that the partnership with Alce Nero exemplifies the company's strategy of starting from a customer need to develop solutions that can later be extended to other companies in the market.
Strategic location
The location near Bologna provides access to both the Italian domestic market and major European transport corridors. According to sources, this geographic position establishes a platform that will allow DP World to expand its contract logistics offering as customer demand grows.
