DP World has deployed 55 electric yard tractors (E-YT) at its terminal in Busan, South Korea, replacing LNG-powered vehicles. The move is part of the company's efforts to reduce emissions generated by terminal operations.
The new electric units account for roughly 36% of the terminal's total yard tractor fleet of 154 units. Each electric tractor is expected to cut CO2 emissions per unit by around 70% compared to the LNG-powered vehicles it replaces.
The transition also aims to reduce the use and disposal of engine fluids, which would lower the risk of spills and the environmental impact of operations. DP World Busan participates in South Korea's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), and the rollout of these tractors aligns with the country's goals of moving toward low-carbon logistics and cleaner port operations.
Statements and operational benefits
Anders Dømmestrup, Chief Operating Officer for Ports and Terminals, Asia Pacific at DP World APAC, said the deployment of these electric tractors marks an important milestone in the company's efforts to reduce emissions from terminal operations while maintaining safe, efficient and reliable service delivery. In addition to the environmental benefits, the equipment offers quieter operation, smoother acceleration and more consistent performance during frequent start-and-stop movements, and with fewer moving parts, maintenance requirements are expected to be lower.
DP World Busan plans to continue expanding the use of electric equipment as part of its long-term efforts to reduce emissions at the terminal. This rollout adds to similar electrification initiatives at other DP World terminals worldwide, such as the Port of Brisbane at Fisherman Island, Australia, Manila South Harbour in the Philippines, and Laem Chabang International Terminal in Thailand.
