Portugal's EDP and Brazilian concessionaire Motiva signed a 15-year solar self-generation power purchase agreement to supply 13 road and rail concessions in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. The agreement provides for the supply of 9.3 average MW, a volume equivalent to around 15% of Motiva's total electricity demand.
Scope of the agreement
The supply will reach 154 medium- and high-voltage consumer units. The rail operations included are the VLT Carioca in Rio de Janeiro, Lines 4-Yellow and 5-Lilac of the São Paulo Metro, and Lines 8-Diamond and 9-Emerald of the São Paulo metropolitan trains. On the roads side, the agreement covers routes operated by Motiva, including the Anhanguera-Bandeirantes, Presidente Dutra and Rio-Santos systems and the BR-163 highway in Mato Grosso do Sul, according to Transporte Moderno.
Source of the power
The electricity will come from one of the plants of EDP's Novo Oriente Solar Complex, located in Ilha Solteira, in the state of São Paulo. According to Agência iNFRA, the complex has an installed capacity of 254 MW, while Transporte Moderno reported that it has 254 MWac, more than 558,000 solar panels and 82 inverters, with monthly output sufficient to supply around 375,000 households.
Impact on costs and the energy mix
The company expects the agreement to help cut its electricity spending by 25% compared with 2023. According to Transporte Moderno, Motiva had already achieved a 20% reduction in these costs by the end of 2025, reaching its target a year ahead of schedule. With the new agreement, self-generation's share of the company's energy supply will rise from 60% to 85%, and the company states that since late 2024 all of its road and rail operations have been supplied exclusively by renewable sources.
Certificates and carbon targets
The agreement also includes International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs) and, according to the companies, will help avoid the emission of around 3,800 tons of carbon dioxide per year. The initiative is part of Motiva's commitment to achieve carbon neutrality in Scopes 1 and 2 by 2035.
