Fincantieri unveiled the latest progress on BOOST² – The Shipyard of the Future, its three-year industrial innovation program aimed at integrating robotics, physical artificial intelligence and automation into production at its shipyards. The update was presented at the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard, where the company showcased solutions already in operation, technologies undergoing validation, and applications under development.
Program scope
The program involved more than 450 Fincantieri employees across 13 shipyards in Italy and abroad, including plants in Romania and the United States. According to Marine Insight, as part of the Industrial Plan, BOOST² envisages investments of nearly 100 million euros.
From experimentation to industrial use
After an initial phase focused on technological exploration and experimentation, the program is now moving toward accelerating industrial rollout, supporting the adoption of new solutions in daily operations and their gradual expansion across the Group's shipyards. This phase relies on collaboration with the innovation ecosystem: through its Open Innovation strategy, Fincantieri identifies technology partners in Italy and abroad, including SMEs and startups, with production teams directly involved in field trials.
Core technologies
At the heart of the program are physical AI, which enables intelligent systems to interact with the physical world, and collaborative robotics, designed to assist workers with complex tasks. These technologies are complemented by digital twin solutions for managing shipyard assets and processes, smart supply chain systems, additive manufacturing, and automated solutions for industrial equipment.
CEO's remarks
Pierroberto Folgiero, Fincantieri's CEO and General Manager, noted that the next frontier of industrial competitiveness is bringing artificial intelligence into the physical world, integrating it with robotics and manufacturing operations expertise. He added that, through BOOST², the company has laid the groundwork for incorporating new technologies into its processes, and that the current challenge is to accelerate their rollout and adoption at scale, with the goal of building the shipyard of the future where people and smart technologies work together.
Cruise order book
According to the latest Seatrade Cruise Orderbook, Fincantieri has 47 ocean cruise ships on order for delivery between November 2026 and 2039, representing 58% of the total cruise ships under construction worldwide in terms of units, and is currently building for 11 different brands.
