GT Wings unveiled the AirWing S, a new compact, lightweight Jet Sail designed for smaller commercial vessels, and used the occasion to showcase the first commercial units of its AirWing technology at the plant of its partner Zunsion Technology in Nantong, China.
Partnership with Zunsion Technology
The new product expands the AirWing family, which GT Wings has been developing together with Zunsion Technology since the two companies announced a strategic manufacturing alliance in March 2026, aimed at producing AirWing systems at industrial scale in China by combining GT Wings' expertise in wind propulsion and systems integration with Zunsion's assembly capabilities. During the open house event, two nearly completed 20-metre AirWing20 units were showcased, soon to be delivered to the first customers.
A Product for Smaller Vessels
As George Thompson, CEO of GT Wings, explained, the AirWing S aims to cover a market segment where vessel size, available deck space and weight considerations affect the feasibility of wind-assisted propulsion, thereby making the emission-reduction benefits of this technology accessible to a wider range of shipowners.
Economics Independent of Regulatory Incentives
The launch is also part of an effort to improve the economic case for wind-assisted propulsion amid uncertainty over future IMO regulatory incentives, with a smaller, lighter design aimed at making the technology commercially viable even without such regulatory support.
International Gathering in Nantong
The open house event at the Nantong plant brought together representatives from China, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Norway, the United Kingdom and other players in the international shipping industry, and included a presentation by Marie Langrishe, Trade Counsellor for Technology and Industry at the British Embassy in Beijing, who highlighted the combination of British innovation with global manufacturing capacity as a contribution to the decarbonisation of the maritime sector.
