Hanwha Power announced that it has obtained Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its design of a fully battery-powered 1,700 TEU container ship. The certificate was presented on October 22, local time, during the Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cells (MHE) Conference and Exhibition 2026, held at the Scandic Hotel Bergen City in Bergen, Norway, from October 21 to 23.
Capacity and Operation
The approved design envisions a fully electric vessel powered by a large-scale Energy Storage System (ESS) of approximately 151 MWh. The energy is stored in containerized battery units that serve as the ship's primary propulsion source, enabling it to operate with no direct carbon emissions through the use of port charging infrastructure.
System Advantages
The containerized batteries can be handled and stowed like standard cargo containers, improving space efficiency, maximizing cargo capacity, and optimizing the vessel's overall performance. This approach also allows for flexible battery replacement and scalable operation, offering a pathway toward decarbonizing short-sea and regional container shipping, according to Hanwha Power.
Statements and Next Steps
Jong-kyu Hwang, Vice President of Technology Solutions at Hanwha Power, attended the ceremony alongside senior ABS representatives and noted that this AiP marks an important step in expanding the company's capabilities in fully electric vessels with large-scale battery systems, aimed at integrated electric propulsion and containerized storage solutions for the next-generation, zero-carbon maritime market.
Electric Vessel Portfolio
In addition to this achievement, Hanwha Power has already completed the basic design of a battery-powered 1,000 TEU container ship. Drawing on its shipbuilding design expertise across multiple vessel classes, the company aims to develop a full lineup of electric propulsion vessels tailored to different operating conditions and customer needs.
