Hapag-Lloyd has completed the acquisition of a 25% stake in APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, the automated container terminal located in the Port of Rotterdam, after competition authorities granted unconditional approval for the deal.
Deal Structure
The stake will be managed within Hapag-Lloyd's Terminals & Infrastructure division through Hanseatic Global Terminals (HGT), while APM Terminals will retain the remaining 75% of the equity and maintain operational control of the facility. The closing concludes the deal announced by both companies on August 19, the financial terms of which were not disclosed.
Executive Statements
Dheeraj Bhatia, CTIO of Hapag-Lloyd AG and CEO of Hanseatic Global Terminals, stated that the company is pleased to have completed the transaction and become a shareholder in Maasvlakte II, and that together with APM Terminals they will seek to support the terminal's growth and development, generating long-term value for customers and strengthening Rotterdam's role as a European gateway. Harold Kunst, Managing Director of APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, noted that Hapag-Lloyd's stake as a shareholder supports the terminal's long-term growth and its ongoing expansion, while the focus remains on operating safely and reliably, and on delivering the additional capacity and performance that customers require.
Expansion and Role in the Gemini Network
Maasvlakte II operates as one of the key European hubs of the Gemini Cooperation, the operational alliance between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk. The terminal is undergoing a large-scale expansion that includes increased berth and yard capacity, as well as greater automation; according to Info Puertos, the project adds 1,000 additional meters of deep-water berth, bringing the total to 2,000 meters, plus four additional rail tracks. Once the expansion is completed, both companies estimate that the terminal will be able to reach an annual capacity of approximately 5.4 million TEU.
Hapag-Lloyd's Terminal Strategy
Hanseatic Global Terminals, established in 2023, operates as an independent entity within the Hapag-Lloyd group focused on terminals and infrastructure. As part of its 2030 vision, the company aims to become a leading global terminal operator and expand its portfolio to approximately 30 terminal investments worldwide.
