Icon Energy Corp. (Nasdaq: ICON), an Athens-based Greek shipping company engaged in the dry bulk seaborne transportation of cargo, announced that it has agreed to acquire a non-controlling stake of approximately 2.8% in the entity owning an 1,800 TEU ECO feeder containership, built in 2023. The vessel is chartered to a major shipping line, although it has not been publicly identified.
Charter Terms
The charter runs at a fixed rate of $24,750 per day through at least February 2028, which would generate minimum contracted revenue of approximately $12 million for the vessel over the remaining charter period. The investment will be funded from the company's available cash and is expected to close by the end of October 2026, subject to definitive documentation and customary closing conditions.
Vessel Management
The vessel will be acquired by a consortium of professional maritime investors led by a containership operator and owner with a well-established track record, which will also take on the commercial and technical management of the vessel. As part of the agreement, Icon will have the right to appoint a representative to the board of the entity formed to own the vessel.
Second Foray into Containerships
This transaction marks Icon's second move into the containership segment this year. In June, the company had already agreed to acquire a stake in an entity formed to purchase a 2008-built, 2,000 TEU geared feeder vessel with high reefer capacity, chartered at $26,500 per day through at least June 2028; Icon Energy, according to the company's original statement, reported that stake at 4.6%, while another industry source placed it at around 5%. The company's core business remains dry bulk cargo transportation, with a fleet comprising panamax, kamsarmax and ultramax vessels.
Co-Investment Strategy
According to the company, these transactions are part of a strategy to complement its core dry bulk business through selective co-investments in adjacent maritime opportunities alongside partners with sector expertise. Icon expects future co-investments of this kind to be pursued opportunistically and sized in a disciplined manner, as passive, non-controlling positions.
