India and the European Union presented an industry coalition to develop a green maritime corridor between both markets, focused on accelerating the use of low-emission fuels such as green ammonia and methanol. The initiative, called the India-EU Green Shipping Corridor Coalition, was formalized with the signing of a letter of intent to advance cooperation on clean shipping.
Launch at Sagarmanthan
The announcement was made on October 7 during the third edition of Sagarmanthan, the maritime dialogue organized in New Delhi by India's Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways together with the Observer Research Foundation. India's shipping secretary, Vijay Kumar, presented the coalition during the session dedicated to the corridor and stated that the goal is to chart a path from feasibility to execution of a commercially viable and scalable route. The coalition follows a pre-feasibility study launched in 2025.
Scope of the coalition
The project aims to match India's potential to produce green fuels with growing European demand, bringing together fuel producers, shipping lines, port operators and other industry players. Participants include the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, while the energy transition organization RMI will act as technical partner. The initiative will also explore cooperation with receiving ports and European industrial buyers.
Renewable energy targets at Indian ports
India also aims to raise the share of renewable energy in the energy consumption of its major ports to more than 60% by 2030 and to more than 90% by 2047, according to Vijay Kumar. Within this framework, the country has identified three ports as green hydrogen hubs: Deendayal Port in Kandla, Paradip Port and V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tuticorin, aimed at the production, storage and supply of alternative fuels for ships.
Context of the dialogue
The launch took place within an event that brought together naval leaders, port authorities, shipbuilders and international organizations from different continents. Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the day with a message in favor of a free, rules-based maritime order, while Minister Sarbananda Sonowal presented the Maritime Amrit Kaal 2047, PM Gati Shakti and Sagarmala programs.
