Lavinia Bulkers, the shipping company controlled by Greek shipowner Panos Laskaridis and his family, has ordered four newcastlemax vessels in China, marking its first order of this type of bulk carrier in more than a decade.
Order Details
According to shipping industry sources, the chosen shipyard was Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard, which will build four bulk carriers of 212,000 deadweight tonnes. The contract is reportedly valued at around $312 million in total, equivalent to approximately $78 million per vessel, with deliveries scheduled for 2030. The deal is said to have been closed the week before it was reported.
First Order Since 2013
The order marks Lavinia's return to the newcastlemax segment since 2013, when the company had contracted six vessels of that size, which remain part of its bulk carrier fleet today.
Recent Focus on Kamsarmax
In recent years, Lavinia had concentrated its investments on smaller bulk carriers. Between 2023 and 2024, the shipping company ordered eight kamsarmax vessels at Chinese shipyards such as CMI, COSCO Heavy Industry and Jiangsu New Hantong. Of that total, five units have already joined the fleet, while the remaining three are scheduled for 2027.
Expansion in Tankers
The Laskaridis group has also been expanding its presence in the crude oil tanker segment. Its division Lavinia Tankers was linked to a fourth suezmax of 157,000 deadweight tonnes at the South Korean shipyard DH Shipbuilding, valued at $89 million, after previously ordering three sister vessels. According to Chinese media, delivery of this new unit is scheduled for 2029, after the program began with two vessels in January and the shipping company exercised additional options.
