Lloyd's Register (LR), Shell and GTT have launched a Joint Development Project (JDP) to develop the concept for a 200,000 m3 LNG carrier combining hybrid-electric propulsion with GTT's NEXT1 cargo containment technology.
Project objectives
By combining a larger-capacity vessel with hybrid-electric propulsion and GTT's cargo containment technology, the partners aim to explore how future LNG carrier designs could carry more cargo, operate more efficiently and offer greater flexibility as industry needs evolve.
Technical scope
Under the JDP, the partners will work on the development and safety verification of the vessel's hybrid-electric propulsion system, focusing on system architecture, redundancy philosophy and battery integration, while also assessing the commercial model from a total cost of ownership (TCO) perspective. In parallel, the integration of GTT NEXT1 technology will be evaluated as part of the vessel's overall concept. The project will also establish technical requirements and guidelines for hybrid-electric propulsion in LNG carrier applications.
Statements
Constantinos Chaelis, Global Gas Segment Director at Lloyd's Register, noted that the industry is under growing pressure to transport more energy with lower emissions and greater operational flexibility, and that larger vessel concepts are being assessed to determine their potential. He added that by bringing together expertise from across the LNG value chain, they aim to develop technical foundations that support a more thorough evaluation of future LNG carrier concepts.
