Metrans, the rail subsidiary of HHLA, has completed a major expansion of its intermodal terminal in Gadki, near Poznan, Poland. The work increased both the storage capacity and the annual handling capacity of the facility, a key node in the company's European rail network.
Greater storage and handling capacity
Maximum storage capacity rose from 8,850 TEU to 11,800 TEU, while annual handling capacity grew by almost 80%, reaching approximately 590,000 TEU.
New rail and technological infrastructure
The project incorporated two remote-controlled rail-mounted gantry cranes, each with an 80-meter span, together with a dedicated access track for the cranes and a remote control station. The three existing tracks were extended to more than 750 meters and two additional tracks were built, enabling operations with the longest freight trains. In addition, 53,000 square meters of new operational areas were paved and camera-based control systems were installed that automatically identify containers and record their condition upon arrival by rail or road, along with a railway weighbridge and a container weighing system.
Statements from Metrans' CEO
Peter Kiss, CEO of the Metrans Group, noted that Gadki demonstrates how modern inland terminals and a strong rail network can improve the connection between seaports and customers in Central Europe. He added that investment in capacity, technology and efficient rail infrastructure creates the conditions for reliable intermodal transport between ports and their hinterland.
European network and economic context
Metrans operates terminals in 15 European countries, and its network connects the North Sea and the Baltic with the Adriatic and the Black Sea; the company handled 1.6 million TEU in 2025. According to Port Strategy, the expansion was co-financed through Poland's National Recovery and Resilience Plan, a country that posted real GDP growth of 3.6% in 2025 and is now the sixth-largest economy in the European Union.
