Modern Terminals Limited and CLPe signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop an electrification roadmap and explore innovative low-carbon solutions for Modern Terminals' container port operations in Hong Kong, with the aim of accelerating the transition toward a greener and more sustainable maritime ecosystem.
Areas of collaboration
Under the agreement, CLPe and Modern Terminals will combine their expertise in energy infrastructure and port operations to develop a comprehensive approach to electrification and green transformation. CLPe will support Modern Terminals' decarbonization strategy by exploring shore power systems for container ships, battery-swapping solutions for container tractors, charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and mobile equipment, and power infrastructure for electric barges.
Official statements
Under Secretary for Transport and Logistics and Commissioner for Maritime and Port Development Amy Chan noted at the signing ceremony that the partnership represents a significant milestone in the green transformation of container terminal operations and a key moment for Hong Kong's maritime industry to accelerate port electrification and maritime decarbonization. For his part, Modern Terminals Limited Group Managing Director Horace Lo explained that after setting the 2030 decarbonization target, they identified three possible pathways, and that electrification emerged as the key long-term pathway thanks to advances in battery technology, complemented by other alternative green fuels.
CLPe's vision
CLPe Managing Director Ringo Ng stated that decarbonizing the maritime sector is vital to Hong Kong's competitiveness as an international maritime hub, and that the company aims to offer comprehensive solutions together with Modern Terminals that will set a new standard for greener port operations and drive the maritime industry toward a net-zero carbon future.
Next steps
Following the signing of the memorandum, CLPe and Modern Terminals will launch a series of feasibility studies and technical assessments for the identified initiatives, in order to develop a phased roadmap that advances Modern Terminals' long-term electrification and sustainability goals.
