Morocco and Turkey have established themselves as PortCastelló's main trading partners, leading general cargo, dry bulk and full container (TEU) traffic during the first nine months of 2026. The Port Authority of Castellón highlighted that this performance strengthens its positioning as a strategic logistics hub and a driver of foreign trade in the Mediterranean arc.
General cargo
In the general cargo segment, Morocco topped the ranking of origin and destination countries with a cumulative volume of 279,967 tonnes, representing a 79.3% increase over the same period in 2025. Turkey ranked second with 140,003 tonnes handled and growth of 98.8%. Greece, Tunisia and Algeria rounded out the top positions in the Mediterranean market.
Dry bulk
In dry bulk cargo, essential for the region's ceramics industry, Turkey remained the top trading partner with more than 1.85 million tonnes between January and September, posting a 14.4% rise. Morocco came in second with 1.1 million tonnes and growth of 20.1%, followed by Romania with a 4.7% increase.
Containers and liquid bulk
Morocco and Turkey's lead also extended to full container traffic, with growth of 163.4% and 123.9% respectively. In the liquid bulk segment, Angola and Kazakhstan topped the volumes, accompanied by Brazil, up 53.49%, and Libya, up 11.69%.
Puertos y Comercio Argentina noted that this growth across the different cargo types reflects the diversification and expansion of port operations across various sectors, amid stronger logistics ties between these regions and PortCastelló.
Overall, the Port of Castellón accumulated total traffic of 14.9 million tonnes through September, a figure that consolidates its position as a strategic hub for foreign trade in the Mediterranean.
