The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the China Classification Society (CCS) have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen collaboration on maritime decarbonisation, digitalisation and talent development in Singapore. The agreement was renewed during the Sixth North Bund International Shipping Forum, held in Shanghai, and according to Manifold Times the signing took place on Tuesday, October 20.
Background of the cooperation
The renewal builds on the partnership established between the two entities in 2023. Since then, MPA and CCS have worked alongside local research and industry partners on projects including the use of B100 biofuel in harbour craft, as well as the assessment, testing and verification of smart vessels.
New areas of work
Under the renewed agreement, MPA and CCS will expand their collaboration on research and development related to decarbonisation, covering the green fuel value chain, marine electrification and energy efficiency technologies for ships. Both organisations will also deepen joint work on digital and smart vessel initiatives, such as digital trials and risk assessment for autonomous vessels, in order to drive research and innovation in the maritime sector.
Talent development
The two entities will also cooperate on talent development through programmes such as the MPA Global Internship Awards, the MaritimeONE Scholarship Programme and internships, which will give students and future maritime professionals exposure to international maritime companies and industry practices.
Statements
Ang Wee Keong, Chief Executive of MPA, said that the renewal of the MOU with CCS builds on the existing partnership to advance towards a more sustainable and innovative maritime sector, and that both parties will seek to exchange expertise to develop decarbonisation and digitalisation solutions while training the talent needed for the future maritime workforce. For his part, Zhao Yan, Chairman of CCS, stated that the organisation has strengthened its presence in Singapore with the aspiration of making the city-state the most comprehensive maritime technology hub outside of China, and that together with MPA it is advancing research to build a robust and future-ready maritime ecosystem centred on decarbonisation and smart technologies.
