MSC Group's Cruise Division held the groundbreaking ceremony on September 28 for Sandy Cay, its new luxury private island destination in the Bahamas, located next to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Construction and site preparation work are already well underway, ahead of the opening scheduled for 2028.
Officials and Executives at the Ceremony
The ceremony was attended by Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Group's Cruise Division, and the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Philip Davis, along with other Bahamian government officials and stakeholders involved in the project. Representatives from the cruise division itself and other key development partners were also present.
An Exclusive, Intimate Destination
Sandy Cay was first announced in April 2026 and is being developed exclusively for guests of MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys. The project offers an immersive, intimate experience with lower density than Ocean Cay, featuring five beaches, wellness and relaxation areas, private retreats, and its own dining offerings.
Upgrades Also Coming to Ocean Cay
At the same time, MSC announced upgrades to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, which will continue to be a regular part of the company's Caribbean itineraries. The improvements include new dining options, separate beach concepts for families and adults, expanded relaxation areas, and marine conservation experiences.
Two Complementary Destinations
According to the company, Sandy Cay is not meant to replace Ocean Cay but to complement it, so that both islands operate as distinct destinations within MSC Group's Caribbean network, each with its own character. The project is part of the company's long-term investment strategy in tourism and cruise infrastructure in the Bahamas.
