Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) received its first ESG recognition from global certification body DNV. The milestone was presented to Claudio Bozzo, Chief Operating Officer of MSC, by Massimo Alvaro, Italy Business Assurance Director at DNV.
Basis of the assessment
The recognition is based on independent assessments of the company's certified management systems, carried out in accordance with internationally recognized standards, including those developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). These systems include ISO 14001 for environmental management, ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety, and ISO 9001, ISO 28000, ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO 22301, covering quality, security, information security and business continuity.
Company statements
According to Bozzo, managing environmental, social and governance performance in a structured way is key to the business's resilience and long-term development, and DNV's recognition provides independent confirmation of the certified systems underpinning MSC's sustainability priorities. The executive added that the achievement reflects the work carried out within the shipping line to strengthen its approach and provide stakeholders with transparency on how these issues are managed.
DNV's perspective
From DNV, Massimo Alvaro noted that the market is showing growing interest in ESG criteria, with more companies seeking to manage related risks and demonstrate their performance in a credible and verifiable way. Alvaro stated that the ESG recognition issued by DNV confirms which certified management systems a company uses to support its ESG performance, and congratulated MSC on achieving it.
Sustainability approach
MSC framed the recognition within its sustainability approach, which is structured around four priorities: driving the decarbonization of logistics, protecting the planet, fostering inclusive trade, and addressing social challenges. The company referred to its 2025 Sustainability Report for further information on its actions, progress and performance in these areas.
