Chinese shipyard Zhoushan Changhong International delivered the containership “MSC Licia X” to Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), with a capacity of 10,300 TEU and dual LNG fuel propulsion. MundoMaritimo reported that the delivery took place on October 20, while Portal Portuario and Jornal Portuario reported the news on October 23.
Technical specifications
The vessel is based on the CIMC ORIC 10300 LNG design, developed together with CIMC's Oceanic Engineering Research and Design Institute. It has a length overall of 299.95 meters and a beam of 45.6 meters, reaches a design speed of 20 knots, and is classed by Lloyd's Register. MundoMaritimo added that the ship has a deadweight of 125,000 dwt and features 1,900 reefer plugs, allowing it to carry cargo requiring temperature control.
Contract and vessel series
MSC and Zhoushan Changhong International signed the newbuilding contract in 2023 for a series of ten LNG-powered 10,300-TEU containerships. Portal Portuario placed the agreement in 2023 with a total value of approximately $1.3 billion, while MundoMaritimo stated that the order was placed in August of that year at a reported price of around $130 million per vessel. The sources also differ on the “MSC Licia X”'s position in the series: Portal Portuario identified it as the seventh vessel delivered, completed 344 days ahead of the budgeted schedule, while MundoMaritimo described it as the sixth ship in the series, delivered roughly eleven months ahead of the contractual delivery date.
Trade route
According to MundoMaritimo, citing Alphaliner, the “MSC Licia X” will join MSC's ‘Carioca’ service, which connects the Far East with the East Coast of South America. That route operates with a fleet of 15 vessels ranging from 8,000 to 12,000 TEU, and includes three other ships of the same CIMC ORIC 10300 LNG design.
