Chinese shipping company Nanjing Tanker Corp has selected Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (DSIC) to build four additional LR2 crude/product tankers as part of its fleet expansion plan. With this new order, the company's LR2 newbuilding program at the Chinese state-owned shipyard now totals six vessels.
Tender Details
The award followed an open tender launched by Nanjing Tanker on September 19, with a bid submission deadline of October 10 at 09:00, according to the China Merchants Group electronic tendering platform. The result was published on October 16 under project G1100000175289019001. The contract price and delivery schedule have not yet been disclosed, nor has the shipping company announced the formal signing of a construction contract for these four vessels.
Technical Requirements and Previous Order
The new vessels must comply with IMO Tier III emissions standards and Phase III requirements of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). Nanjing Tanker already has two 115,000 dwt LR2s under construction at DSIC under a contract signed in September 2025. According to Splash 247, those deliveries are scheduled for August and October 2028, while Ports News Russia specified that the contract approved in 2025 has an investment cap of 1,090 million yuan (US$162.2 million) including taxes, with delivery in the second half of 2028 and vessels prepared to operate on methanol as dual fuel.
Fleet Renewal Plan
The order is part of a broader fleet renewal strategy by Nanjing Tanker, which also has two 65,000 dwt panamax crude/product tankers under construction at Dalian and which in July ordered four 50,000 dwt MR product/chemical tankers at Guangzhou Shipyard International for up to US$182.8 million. According to Splash 247, as of late June the company controlled 73 vessels totaling around 2.8 million dwt, of which 34 were product tankers; Ports News Russia, however, put the fleet at 74 vessels and around 2.81 million dwt, with an annual carrying capacity of over 44 million tonnes of crude oil, refined products, chemicals and gases.
Nanjing Tanker, founded in 1993 and headquartered in Nanjing, is controlled by China Merchants Group and is part of China Changjiang National Shipping. DSIC, for its part, is a Chinese state-owned shipyard under the control of China State Shipbuilding Co.
