Greek maritime education specialist Natalia Margioli-Komninou has become the first woman to lead the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) in its 115-year history. The appointment was confirmed during the institute's annual Court of Control meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, where she succeeded outgoing President Punit Oza, who had held the role for the past two years. Margioli-Komninou is also the first Greek national to take on the presidency of the organization.
Background
Margioli-Komninou is the founder and managing director of the Hellenic Management Centre, which she has run since 1999, and holds a BA in Business Administration and an MBA. In 2005 she established the Greek branch of the ICS alongside her training centre, building one of the institute's most active national branches. She had been elected Vice President of the ICS last year, a role she held from 2024 according to one source, before now stepping up to the presidency.
Priorities
Among her priorities, the new President cited strengthening maritime education, engaging young shipping professionals, improving cooperation between the institute's international branches, and deepening relations with the global shipping industry. She also highlighted the challenges posed by artificial intelligence, sustainability and increasingly complex regulations, arguing that maritime professionals must embrace new technologies without losing the commercial judgement and expertise on which shipping is built.
New Leadership
At the same meeting, the institute elected Jeffrey Blum as the new Vice President for a two-year term. Outgoing President Punit Oza reviewed the institute's progress during his two-year tenure, including greater international visibility and the establishment of a five-year strategic direction, and noted that Margioli-Komninou's long track record within the organization provides a solid foundation for its future development.
About the ICS
Founded in 1911 and granted a royal charter in 1920, the ICS is headquartered in London and has 27 branches with more than 4,000 members and associates worldwide. The institution offers professional qualifications, examinations and training in shipbroking and related maritime disciplines.
