Asia LNG Transport Sdn. Bhd. (ALT), a joint venture between Japanese shipping company NYK and Malaysian MISC Berhad, signed a long-term time charter contract with Malaysia LNG Sdn. Bhd. (MLNG) for a newbuild LNG carrier. The vessel will be built by Chinese shipyard Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. and is scheduled for delivery in 2028, after which it will be deployed to transport liquefied natural gas to Japan.
The agreement was signed at a ceremony held in Tokyo on October 9, with representatives from MLNG, MISC and NYK in attendance. At the event, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to working together to ensure the safe and stable execution of the project.
Vessel specifications
The new LNG carrier will have a cargo tank capacity of 18,700 cubic meters, a dual-fuel diesel electric (DFDE) propulsion system, an overall length of approximately 129.8 meters and a molded beam of around 25.4 meters.
NYK Senior Managing Executive Officer Hironobu Watanabe expressed satisfaction at having secured the charter contract and stated that, together with MLNG, MISC and the other partners, the company will strive to provide safe and reliable LNG transport services, thereby contributing to a stable energy supply for Japan.
Strategic context
The deal is part of NYK's strategy to strengthen its Energy division, where the LNG and LPG carrier business is regarded as a growth area under the company's medium-term management plan. According to an industry report, this is a small-scale newbuild intended to replace what will be a 30-year-old steam turbine vessel.
