Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) will jointly operate the East Coast South America Express 1 (SX1) service, also identified as 'Ipanema,' which connects major Asian ports with the east coast of South America. The new structure will take effect starting in April 2027 and replaces the vessel sharing agreement that until now also included Hapag-Lloyd, a carrier that is withdrawing from the partnership.
Dates of the New Scheme
While ONE indicated that the joint operation will be effective starting April 2027 without specifying an exact date, both MundoMaritimo and Splash 247 reported that the first sailing under the new agreement will depart from Shanghai on April 3, 2027, with weekly frequency.
Goals of the Collaboration
According to ONE, the goal of the new operational structure is to offer greater reliability, improve schedule adherence, and optimize transit times, as well as to provide direct and robust coverage between major origin points in Asia and the South American east coast through weekly services on fixed days. Splash 247 added that MSC will deploy additional vessels to replace the capacity left by Hapag-Lloyd, although the carrier did not disclose how many ships it will add or the total capacity involved.
Ports and Rotation
The service will maintain direct calls at major ports in southern Brazil, including Santos, Paranaguá, and Navegantes, in addition to calls in the Río de la Plata at Montevideo and Buenos Aires. According to the preliminary rotation released by ONE and MundoMaritimo, the itinerary includes Shanghai, Ningbo, Shekou, Hong Kong, Singapore, Santos, Paranaguá, Navegantes, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and Rio Grande, then returning via Paranaguá, Navegantes, Santos, Singapore, and Hong Kong to Shanghai. Splash 247 noted that ONE's final rotation is still subject to operational review.
End of the Three-Way Partnership
The restructuring ends a long-standing cooperation among the three carriers, who had expanded their partnership on the Asia-South America route in late 2018, when ONE added weekly services to expand coverage between both regions. Under the new scheme, MSC and ONE will continue their cooperation while Hapag-Lloyd withdraws from the vessel sharing agreement.
