The ports of Paraná, Brazil, handled 52.1 million tonnes of cargo between January and September 2026, considering both loading and unloading operations. The result was marked by a 63% increase in soybean oil exports and a 4% rise in container handling measured in TEUs, according to reports from Portal Portuario, Jornal Portuario and Datamar News.
Imports and Soybean Oil
Of the total volume handled, 18.2 million tonnes corresponded to imports, representing 35% of the cargo moved during the period. Regarding soybean oil, the Port of Paranaguá shipped 1.24 million tonnes, up from 760,600 tonnes in the same period of 2025. This growth placed Paranaguá at the forefront of national performance, as it accounted for more than 82% of the increase in Brazilian soybean derivative exports: while Brazil's overseas shipments grew by 586,600 tonnes, the Paraná port contributed 486,300 tonnes of that increase, concentrating 70% of the 1.75 million tonnes exported by the country. Portos do Paraná's operations director, Gabriel Vieira, attributed the performance to greater soybean meal and oil production capacity in the region and to quality controls carried out prior to shipment.
Soybeans and Containers
Soybeans remained the main product exported through Paraná's ports, with 13.29 million tonnes shipped between January and September, 9% more than the 12.2 million tonnes recorded in the same period of 2025, equivalent to 39.1% of total export volume. Container throughput also showed gains: volume rose from 1.22 million to 1.27 million TEUs, a 4% increase. In tonnage terms, containerized exports grew 6%, from 7.01 to 7.44 million tonnes, while imports rose from 5.62 to 5.96 million tonnes.
Poultry Exports
Datamar News also highlighted the performance of poultry exports through Paranaguá, which accounted for 47% of Brazil's seaborne shipments of this product between January and September 2026, with 1.87 million tonnes loaded, 18.7% more than the 1.57 million tonnes recorded in the same period of 2025. The port accounted for 65.1% of the increase in Brazil's frozen chicken exports, channeling some 294,000 tonnes of the 451,900 additional tonnes exported by the country. In September alone, Paranaguá shipped 199,200 tonnes of poultry, 12% more than the 177,800 tonnes recorded in the same month of 2025.
China as Destination and Investments
China established itself as the main destination for poultry exports through Paranaguá, receiving 198,400 tonnes between January and September, against a backdrop in which Chinese purchases of Brazilian poultry rose from 325,000 tonnes for all of 2025 to 450,000 tonnes in the first nine months of 2026. Gabriel Vieira attributed the growth to higher international demand and favorable global market conditions, while Portos do Paraná's CEO, Luiz Fernando Garcia, noted that infrastructure investments expanded storage capacity and the handling of refrigerated containers.
