Peru's Minister of Transport and Communications, José Angello Tangherlini, met with representatives of the Union of Truck Owners and Operators of Peru to address measures aimed at ensuring the continuity of freight transport and logistics services in the country.
Diesel Subsidies
During the meeting, participants discussed the need to secure funding for subsidies that would partially offset the impact of the sustained rise in diesel prices on truckers. As part of this effort, the creation of a joint working group with the Ministry of Energy and Mines was announced to address the issue.
Transition to CNG and LNG
Another topic addressed was the promotion of the transition toward the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) for vehicles. To this end, a proposal was put forward to launch a pilot vehicle renewal program that would include public-sector incentives, bonuses, and scrappage mechanisms.
Sanctions and the Callao Terminals
The agenda also included the extension of the sanctions regularization program run by the Superintendencia de Transporte Terrestre de Personas, Carga y Mercancías (Sutran), aimed at meeting the sector's needs regarding compliance with obligations and administrative sanctions. Representatives of the trucking companies also raised the situation at the Callao port terminals and called for guarantees of safety, operational efficiency, and service quality, aspects considered key to transport and foreign trade.
The MTC stated that it will continue to promote coordination forums with industry stakeholders to address their main needs and help ensure the continuity of freight transport, logistics, and the supply of goods in the country.
