On October 12, the event “Ciudad Puerto Corío: a new development platform for the south” was held in Lima, where Peruvian authorities presented the investment opportunities that the Corío Megaport will generate, a new port, logistics and industrial hub on the South Pacific coast located in Arequipa. According to Andina, the event was to take place on Monday, October 12, at the Hilton hotel in Lima, while Portal Portuario had previously reported that the event would be held on October 15 at the same hotel.
Master Plan Approval
The presentation came after the National Port Authority (APN) approved the Master Plan for the Corío Port Terminal on September 3, through Board Agreement Resolution No. 068-2026-APN-DIR. Subsequently, on September 29, the APN requested ProInversión, through Official Letter No. 0191-2026-APN-PD-DIPLA, to evaluate and launch the project's promotion process with private sector participation. The terminal will be publicly owned and for public use, with national scope, making it part of the country's strategic infrastructure agenda.
Estimated Investment in Three Phases
According to ProInversión, the development of the Corío Port Terminal involves an estimated investment of 844.48 million dollars across three phases. The first would require 651.98 million dollars and will be complemented by a logistics city spanning more than 34,000 hectares with distribution centers, warehousing, industrial parks and value-added activities. The second phase foresees a preliminary investment of 109.25 million dollars, including a second berth for bulk cargo and a rail component, while the third phase contemplates 83.25 million dollars for a third specialized berth.
International Interest and Available Land
The regional governor of Arequipa, Rohel Sánchez, reported interest from companies in the United States, China, South Korea, India, Turkey and the Netherlands, among other countries, in investing in the project. Sánchez indicated that the Regional Government of Arequipa registered 34,596 hectares of land for the project's various zones, of which the port core will occupy 1,127 hectares and would likely be developed through a Public-Private Partnership. As part of the event, ProInversión and the Regional Government of Arequipa signed an Inter-institutional Cooperation Agreement to promote the project.
Impact on Employment and Trade
According to estimates by the Regional Government of Arequipa, the initiative could generate more than 50,000 direct jobs and 150,000 indirect jobs, in addition to contributing to the development of technical capabilities, innovation and knowledge transfer. ProInversión noted that the first phase could have a potential impact equivalent to 1.9% of national GDP, and that by 2030 it is projected to handle up to 932,000 tons of general cargo and 19 million tons of bulk cargo.
Statements from ProInversión
The executive president of ProInversión, Luis Del Carpio, stated that the true scale of Corío will be determined by the investment in industry, employment and economic activity generated beyond the port itself, stressing that the goal is to build economic systems rather than isolated projects within the country's southern logistics corridor.
