Phoenix Reisen, the German shipping line based in Bonn, confirmed the acquisition of the vessel Insignia, currently operated by Oceania Cruises, which will join its fleet under the name Alvara starting in November 2027. The ship, built in 1998, has capacity for around 700 passengers and will begin sailing for the German company following the deal, the terms of which were not disclosed.
Refit at Lloyd Werft
Before its debut, the vessel will enter the Lloyd Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven in September 2027, where it will be repainted in Phoenix's signature turquoise color and undergo a series of modifications to align the onboard experience with the rest of the company's fleet. Phoenix CEO Benjamin Krumpen noted that the ship is exceptionally well maintained, in excellent technical condition, and already equipped for shore power connection.
Management and fleet
The vessel's management will be handled by two longtime Phoenix partners: Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) will oversee technical management, while sea chefs will supervise hospitality services. With this addition, the Alvara will become the fourth ocean-going ship in the Phoenix fleet, which already operates the Amadea, the Amera and the Artania, following the end of the charter agreement for the Deutschland, which concludes this year.
Initial itineraries
The Alvara's inaugural program, based out of Hamburg, will include a series of short cruises, a Christmas cruise and two longer voyages through the Mediterranean. Among the first itineraries are five-day departures to Rotterdam and Amsterdam, trips through the English Channel with calls at Dover and Antwerp, and voyages to Scandinavia with stops in Oslo, Gothenburg and the Kiel Canal. Online bookings for seven voyages opened on October 23, 2026, with full details to be published in the Phoenix magazine on November 6 and in the Seereisen 2028 catalog on December 18.
Christening on the company's anniversary
Following Phoenix Reisen's tradition of not having the christening coincide with the maiden voyage, the ship will be officially named in Hamburg on November 26, 2027, a date marking the company's 54th founding anniversary, with a short four-day voyage to Oslo.
Ship's history
The Insignia was originally built as the R One for Renaissance Cruises in 1998 and has operated for Oceania Cruises under its current name since 2003. The vessel had previously been slated to become a residential cruise ship under a ten-year charter agreement with the start-up Crescent Seas, but that plan was cancelled last year after the company shifted its strategy toward building new vessels.
