The Port of Dampier, in Western Australia, has completed the first stage of the Dampier Bulk Handling Facility (DBHF), part of the broader Dampier Cargo Wharf project being developed by Pilbara Ports. The works included a 200-meter shore-attached wharf and a 280-meter berth pocket with a depth of 13.2 meters, designed to support urea exports and general cargo operations.
Capacity for Bulk Carriers and Cruise Ships
The new facility also features a maneuvering area with an 11-meter depth, sized to accommodate Supramax and Panamax bulk carriers. According to details from Diario del Puerto and Port Strategy, the development was also designed to provide additional capacity for general cargo operations and cruise ship calls.
Contract with ShibataFenderTeam
To equip the new berth, ShibataFenderTeam designed and supplied 18 twin cone fender systems, comprising a total of 36 SPC 1600 cone fenders. The order was placed under contract with Clough Projects Australia, responsible for the design and construction on behalf of Pilbara Ports, while Jacobs served as the project consultant.
Equipment Specifications
Each twin system includes a closed steel panel measuring 4,700 by 8,500 millimeters, fitted with 100-millimeter-thick UHMW-PE sliding pads. The supply was rounded out with 21 T-head bollards, with rated mooring capacities of 100 and 150 tonnes, along with a 7.5 kW capstan manufactured by Straatman.
Installation Completed
Sources agreed that the 18 fender systems, along with the bollards and the capstan, are now fully installed at the new berth, following a process that required close coordination with Clough's on-site team due to the size of the components. The wharf's construction also incorporated more than 8,000 tonnes of precast concrete elements, including pile caps, beams, slabs, and fender blocks, reflecting the scale of the infrastructure investment.
