The Port of Gothenburg completed, on schedule and within budget, the reinforcement of the south quay at its container terminal, a milestone within the Skandia Gateway project. With this stage closed, the port is moving forward to the next phase, which involves blasting and dredging works on the channel to allow the entry of larger container ships.
Dredging begins
Blasting and dredging works, carried out by the company Boskalis Sweden, began on October 13 along the 700 meters furthest west of the south quay, covering the first 50 meters of water alongside the quay. More than 200,000 cubic meters of soft material and around 30,000 cubic meters of rock will be removed, with completion expected by March 2027.
Quay reinforcement
The quay reinforcement, carried out by the Swedish construction company NCC since spring 2024, took more than two years of work. Elin Dörrheide, project manager for the quay reinforcement within Skandia Gateway, described the work as an important milestone and highlighted that it was a technically complex project that allows progress to continue as planned toward the next stage.
Next stage led by the Swedish Maritime Administration
In parallel, the Swedish Maritime Administration is preparing a separate contract for the blasting and dredging works on the navigation channel and the turning basin, with signing expected in early 2027 and works set to begin in August 2027. The goal is for the widened channel and quay to be operational by the end of 2028, which would allow the port to receive vessels up to 430 meters in length overall and 65 meters in beam, with drafts of up to 17.5 meters, several meters larger than those currently calling at the terminal.
Strategic importance
According to the source, several of Europe's leading container ports face depth and capacity constraints, which is why Skandia Gateway seeks to create better conditions for the world's largest container ships to call at Gothenburg, facilitating direct trade between Sweden and global markets. Dörrheide noted that Skandia Gateway is an investment designed for several decades and that, once completed, it will strengthen the port's capacity and competitiveness for Swedish industry.
