The Asociación de Consignatarios y Empresas Portuarias del Puerto de Málaga (ACEMAR) and the Coordinadora Estatal de Trabajadores del Mar del Puerto de Málaga signed, with the Port Authority in attendance, a new Sectoral Collective Bargaining Agreement to govern labor relations in stevedoring operations within the Málaga port precinct. The agreement will remain in force for ten years and was drawn up with the advice of Francisco Vila Tierno, professor of Labor Law at the Universidad de Málaga.
Scope of the agreement
The agreement is the result of a lengthy collective bargaining process between the employers' and workers' organizations, and seeks to consolidate job stability for a workforce made up of 159 permanent employees and 21 temporary workers. It also aims to foster the development of stevedoring activity and job creation in a sector that, according to sources, has seen growing demand for positions in recent years.
Background to the negotiation
The process that led to the signing is part of a dialogue that had already shown previous progress: in 2022 the parties negotiated the continuity of EstiMálaga CPE, S. A., the company that employs most of the port's stevedoring staff. Subsequently, the increased activity of shipping line MSC at Noatum Terminal Málaga, together with the collective bargaining agreements, made it possible to expand EstiMálaga's workforce with 82 new employees on permanent contracts and the training of a further 19 temporary workers. Since 2024, employer and worker representatives have been negotiating the sectoral agreement now signed.
Ten-year objectives
The ten-year term sets out a shared roadmap for the signing organizations and other port industry stakeholders. Key objectives include boosting productivity, strengthening workplace safety and optimizing the services the Port of Málaga offers to businesses in its catchment area, with the aim of improving import and export processes and bolstering the operational and competitive capacity of the Málaga docks.
The Málaga Port Authority, together with the stevedoring companies and worker representatives, reaffirmed its commitment to social dialogue and to reaching agreements that support the development of port activity, consolidate the port's role as a job creator, and boost the local economy.
