On the morning of Wednesday, October 28, the Port of Santos conducted a simulated emergency response exercise at the São Paulo Regasification Terminal (TRSP), located within the port estuary. The scenario recreated a natural gas leak evolving into a fire, and mobilized more than 60 professionals, including representatives from the São Paulo State Environmental Agency (Cetesb) and Civil Defense.
Purpose of the exercise
The training, organized by the terminal itself, sought to test coordination among the participating agencies and prepare emergency teams for a potential real occurrence. The drill took place aboard the Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU), the main structure of the TRSP.
Statements from Edge
Catarina Amaral, Director of Operations, Logistics and Technology at Edge, the company responsible for the terminal, noted that this type of exercise is essential to prepare teams, test protocols and ensure a coordinated response to emergencies. She added that safety is one of the company's pillars, supported by an integrated Health, Safety and Environment policy aimed at strengthening prevention and operational readiness.
Details of the simulated scenario
The exercise involved a leak in the 16-inch pipeline connecting the loading arms to the terminal's metering station (EMED). Based on this incident, procedures were tested for leak detection and activation of emergency systems, the safe shutdown of gas flow, and coordination between the FSRU vessel, the jetty and external resources, as well as protective measures for adjacent facilities. The simulation also included a partial evacuation of the area and response to an injured worker, with the intervention of the fire brigade and first aid team.
Personnel mobilization
More than 30 brigade members from the FSRU crew and seven brigade members from the terminal's operations team took part, along with 15 professionals from Edge and the operator involved in the response and assessment structure of the exercise, in addition to eight public agents. No closure of public roads was planned in the municipalities of Santos, Guarujá or Cubatão.
