Ports of Stockholm has inaugurated a new bulk loading facility at the Port of Stockholm Norvik, which will enable the crushed rock accumulated during the port's construction to be shipped by sea to infrastructure projects in the Baltic Sea region.
Two berths for large bulk carriers
The facility was built for NCC Industry and consists of two pile-supported berths designed to accommodate large bulk carriers. Transporting the material by sea reduces pressure on the port's storage areas and frees up land for commercial development.
The crushed rock was generated during the extensive construction works at Stockholm Norvik. Clearing this stockpile will free up space for the business and logistics park that NCC Industry plans to develop on the site, intended for companies seeking access to the port and its transport connections.
Johan Wallén, Commercial Director at Ports of Stockholm, noted that the new port facility is an important step in the development of Stockholm Norvik, as enabling the material to be shipped out more efficiently frees up valuable port space and opens up opportunities for new companies in the area, which, together with NCC Industry's logistics park project, will strengthen Norvik's position as a key logistics hub for Swedish imports and exports.
The facility was officially inaugurated on October 16, although shipments had already begun earlier due to existing demand. The new infrastructure is also expected to allow the crushed rock to reach additional markets.
