The Port of Ushuaia is carrying out an infrastructure modernization plan that includes an investment of over USD 2.5 million to replace 75 fenders on the main pier, work on the Catamaran Pier, and improvements to key services such as water and electricity. The intervention is taking place during the 2026/2027 cruise season, which, according to the National Ports and Navigation Agency (ANPYN), has more than 550 confirmed port calls, while another source states that the season has 515 scheduled and confirmed arrivals, 4% more than the 495 calls recorded in the 2025/2026 season.
Fender Replacement
The work involves removing the current fenders and installing 75 new units, which will begin arriving in December, along with calibration of the system. In the meantime, the areas where they will be installed are being prepared, the supports are undergoing maintenance, and the anchoring points are being readied. The work is being financed with the port's own funds generated through savings in port operations and, according to one of the sources, has an execution period of 270 consecutive days, scheduled so as not to disrupt activity during the season.
Catamaran Pier and Future Concrete Pier
At the same time, repair and provisional adaptation work on the Catamaran Pier is moving forward, while the executive project for building a new concrete structure to replace the current one is being developed. ANPYN stated that the tender for this project will be announced in the coming weeks, although it did not specify award or start dates for the work.
Floating Dock, Water and Electricity
The plan also includes refloating and relocating the Yerba-3 Floating Dock, a maneuver aimed at freeing up Berth 1 of the Commercial Pier and recovering operational space. In addition, the comprehensive overhaul of the drinking water cistern has been awarded, which would allow the vessel water supply to obtain official potability certification for the first time, and a tender is underway to comprehensively renew the terminal's electrical and drinking water systems. Maintenance tasks have already been completed, such as marking passenger and vehicle circulation areas and restoring facilities used by those arriving at the port.
Context of the Intervention
The works are being carried out under the national intervention of the port, a decision questioned by the government of Tierra del Fuego, which had previously announced it would take the matter to court. ANPYN maintains that the plan addresses accumulated structural deficiencies, while the Provincial Ports Directorate had acknowledged weather-related and funding difficulties in carrying out the works.
