The Port Authority of Vigo awarded the demolition works for eight cement silos located at the Container Terminal, an intervention that will free up an area of approximately 6,000 square meters considered key to the operability of the port zone.
More Space for Traffic Growth
The aim of demolishing the old Tudela Veguín silos is to redevelop the yard they currently occupy in order to meet the terminal's growing logistics needs, amid sharp increases in container traffic, which according to forecasts will hit a new all-time high in 2026 with a rise of nearly 5%, with expectations that this trend will continue.
Construction Timeline
Following the contract award, the silos will first be fully emptied and then demolished, after which the new yard will be prepared. The maximum execution period set is eight months, although the port is seeking to speed up the work so that the area is available by spring 2027.
Continuation of a Reorganization Plan
This demolition follows the removal of another eight silos carried out between 2015 and 2019, which had already reduced visual impact, freed up port space, and improved loading and unloading operations. The new demolition is part of a broader reorganization plan aimed at gaining efficiency across every square meter of the facility.
Next Step: The Border Control Post
According to the Port of Vigo, the freeing up of this space represents the first piece of a larger project: the construction of the new Border Control Post (BCP), through which the port authority seeks to improve inspection services and streamline foreign trade, strengthening its position within the Atlantic Arc.
