Port Tarragona is strengthening its alliances with ports in France and Italy to advance the deployment of floating offshore wind power. The Catalan port took part this week in the first meeting of the MedWindPorts working group, held within the framework of the Offshore Wind Revolution congress, which took place in Taranto from October 7 to 9.
Participants and objectives
The meeting brought together representatives from the ports of Marseille-Fos, Sète and Port-la-Nouvelle, in France, and Augusta and Taranto, in Italy, along with Tarragona, as well as the Directorate for Marine Renewable Energy of the Occitanie Region, the WindEurope association and the consultancy Magellan Circle. The aim was to share experiences and best practices, both from northern European ports and from other areas of the Mediterranean, and to move toward creating a network of ports capable of providing a joint response to the sector's expected growth. The need for greater certainty in the deployment of floating offshore wind farms in the Mediterranean was also raised, along with the promotion of specialized multi-port systems and the drive to boost industrialization in the territories near hub ports.
Expansion of the Muelle de Baleares
In this context, the Tarragona delegation presented the expansion project for the Muelle de Baleares, which will add 22 new hectares to the port area, turning it into one of the main Mediterranean hubs for floating offshore wind power.
Tarragona's strengths
Port Tarragona highlighted technical strengths such as its proximity to future wind farms, draft, experience, weather conditions and available space, as well as economic, social and political aspects such as its business fabric, skilled labor force, talent trained at universities and research centers, and institutional consensus. According to the presentation, this combination allows the port to serve the entire value chain of floating offshore wind power, from the construction of wind turbines and their components to assembly, logistics and the maintenance of these structures.
EnerMar and funding
This positioning had already been put forward on October 2 at EnerMar, the Marine Energy Congress held in Valencia, where Port Tarragona took part alongside representatives from IDAE and the Port of Castellón. The head of the Port Management department, Pau Morales, underscored Tarragona's role in the deployment of floating offshore wind farms in the Gulf of Lion, both in the construction and assembly of floaters and in turbine integration, and noted that this positioning and the project's maturity allowed Port Tarragona to be the Mediterranean-facing port with the highest score in the Port EOLMAR grant call aimed at funding new port spaces linked to this activity.
