The Board of Directors of the Autoridad Portuaria de Castellón approved an amendment to the purpose of the administrative concession held by Masol Iberia Biofuel S.L.U. in the Dársena Sur, allowing its liquids berth—until now for exclusive private use—to be opened, on an exceptional basis, to general use in order to increase operations and maximize the infrastructure's performance.
A More Flexible Concession
Masol Iberia Biofuel has held, since 2009, a concession over port public domain land to build and operate a biodiesel plant and a private liquids berth. With the approved change, the facility moves to a more flexible scheme that allows other concession holders and vessels to operate at the berth in exchange for the corresponding fee, without Masol losing ownership of its concession, which according to PortCastelló increases the port's competitiveness.
Partial Transfer to Sevitrade
In the same agreement, the Board also approved the partial transfer of berth use to the company Sevitrade, which is interested in developing logistics and commercial activities there. Sevitrade will have exclusive use of part of the berth for several years for its operations, while the rest of the facility will remain under Masol's private ownership, though open to use by third parties.
More Capacity for Liquid Bulk
PortCastelló frames the decision within its strategy to strengthen the efficiency of the Dársena Sur and boost liquid bulk traffic, cargo with growing weight at the port: in August, these bulk volumes had risen 42% year-on-year and accounted for 47.2% of the accumulated volume, according to the report compiled by InfoPuertos. The measure adds to other investments in the sector, such as the recent award of works worth 628,000 euros to pave sidewalks and upgrade services on the cross streets of the liquid bulk area.
According to InfoPuertos, PortCastelló's official statement, dated October 30, does not specify the exact term of the transfer to Sevitrade, the expected traffic volume, or the economic conditions for third-party access—aspects that will need to be defined in the practical implementation of the agreement between the Autoridad Portuaria de Castellón, the concession holders, and authorized users.
