PortMiami launched a series of traffic management initiatives to ease access to the port ahead of the start of its 2026-2027 peak cruise season. The season will include 81 days during which between seven and ten vessels will call simultaneously at the port's terminals.
New Routes and Monitoring Technology
Among the measures, the port will distribute informational videos on boarding schedules and entry selection, and will coordinate with cruise lines, taxis and transportation companies to direct passengers according to their terminal: those heading to terminals AA, A, B, C or D will need to enter through the PortMiami Tunnel, while those headed to E, F, G, J or V will do so via the bridge. In addition, the port will continue working with GridMatrix, a company that uses AI-powered computer vision to monitor congestion and anticipate bottlenecks.
Security and Airport Transfers
The plan also calls for the deployment of public safety personnel and law enforcement, including PortMiami, the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office and the City of Miami Police Department, along Biscayne Boulevard and surrounding areas on select dates. As part of the pilot programs, Carnival Cruise Line will offer free transfers to Miami International Airport for Carnival Celebration passengers starting in October 2026, an initiative that adds to the scheme already in place through Royal Caribbean Group for Icon of the Seas passengers.
A Record-Breaking Season
December will be one of the busiest months, with nine or ten vessels in port simultaneously for more than ten days, and weekends will see the highest passenger volumes with the arrival of ships such as the 5,610-passenger Icon of the Seas and the 5,400-passenger MSC World America. The port will also host inaugural calls by vessels such as Explora III, Ilma, Emerald Sakara, Four Seasons I and several Silversea ships, along with the debut of Margaritaville at Sea, the repositioning of Carnival Firenze, and the launch of Royal Caribbean's new ships Norwegian Aura and Hero of the Seas. Just a few weeks ago, PortMiami welcomed its ten-millionth cruise passenger of the fiscal year.
Official Statements
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava noted that these initiatives reflect the county's commitment to smarter mobility and the responsible use of innovation, and congratulated Director Jonathan Daniels for driving the project forward in his first eight weeks on the job. Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins emphasized the importance of listening to the port's partners and neighbors, while Daniels noted that, as the world's busiest cruise port, these improvements aim to reduce congestion, strengthen security and enhance the passenger experience.
