The Alexandria Port Authority proposed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Port of Barcelona after hosting a Spanish delegation, with the aim of strengthening cooperation in shipping, trade and logistics between Egypt and Spain.
Delegation members
The Spanish delegation was made up of representatives from the Port of Barcelona, the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and the Mercabarna wholesale market, and was received alongside officials from the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. The meeting sought to strengthen ties between Egypt and Spain in the maritime sector.
Institutional framework
According to Port Technology, the talks are part of broader efforts to reinforce bilateral trade and maritime ties, in line with directives from Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir, Egypt's Minister of Transport. The meeting was led by the Vice Chairman for Operations of the Alexandria Port Authority on behalf of the authority's chairman, with the Vice Chairman for Investment and other senior officials also taking part.
Pillars of cooperation
Topics discussed included the exchange of technical and operational expertise, the development of joint initiatives and opportunities to boost trade flows in the Mediterranean. The proposed memorandum would define areas of cooperation, implementation mechanisms and channels for knowledge exchange between both parties.
Projects and infrastructure
During the meeting, Egyptian officials presented the Port of Alexandria's ongoing development projects, its operational capacity, logistics infrastructure and future expansion plans. They also discussed how closer ties with Spanish partners could strengthen Alexandria's role in international trade and improve its connections with regional and global markets. The delegation also toured the port's facilities and operations, and both sides committed to continuing coordination, although no signing date or implementation timeline was announced for the memorandum.
