Gasunie and Vopak announced that construction of the fourth LNG storage tank at the Gate terminal, located in Maasvlakte within the Port of Rotterdam, has been completed, and that the unit has already been brought into operation. The terminal is a joint venture between the two companies.
Greater Storage and Regasification Capacity
The new tank provides 180,000 cubic meters of LNG storage capacity. According to Portal Portuario, this expansion adds 4 billion cubic meters of regasification capacity per year, raising Gate's total to 20 billion cubic meters annually, compared with a Dutch gas market of around 30 billion cubic meters per year. Port of Rotterdam and Port Technology likewise note that this total capacity of 20 billion cubic meters per year is equivalent to two-thirds of the total Dutch gas market.
A Milestone for Energy Security
Jarmo Stoopman, CEO of Gate Terminal, said that bringing the fourth tank online marks an important milestone, as Gate expands its capacity and strengthens its role as a strategic gateway for energy supply to the Netherlands and northwestern Europe. Stoopman added that the ability to supply LNG from different parts of the world helps Europe diversify its supply and improve energy security.
New Jetties on the Way
Construction of a fourth jetty for the Gate terminal is also underway. Portal Portuario reports that, following the final investment decision made in January 2026, the project is progressing well, while Port of Rotterdam and Port Technology specify that it is the Rotterdam Port Authority that is building this jetty. All three sources agree that it is expected to begin small-scale operations, for both vessel loading and LNG bunkering, by late 2028.
Fifth Jetty Under Evaluation
To meet growing demand for cleaner marine fuels, Gate Terminal launched a non-binding call for expressions of interest on August 31, 2026, according to Portal Portuario, allowing market players to express interest in the future loading capacity of a fifth jetty. Port of Rotterdam and Port Technology confirm that Gate is evaluating the development of this fifth jetty and that the decision will depend on the level of market interest.
