- Royal Caribbean to debut The SpongeBob Musical aboard Hero OTS in 2027
Royal Caribbean announced it will debut 'The SpongeBob Musical' aboard the Hero of the Seas, the fourth ship in the Icon Class, which will sail from Miami in August 2027. This marks the first production of the musical staged at sea, inspired by the hit Broadway show and the Nickelodeon animated series, and it will be presented in the ship's Royal Theater.
The production reimagines the story of SpongeBob and his friends from Bikini Bottom into a family-friendly version with unexpected twists, characters, and songs, as the main characters try to save their city from destruction. Christi Coachman, Royal Caribbean's Vice President of Entertainment, noted that the Hero of the Seas' entertainment lineup is designed to bring together families of all ages through a well-known story, combining creativity and cutting-edge technology.
A Ship with Eight Neighborhoods
The Hero of the Seas, which according to Cruise Industry News has a gross tonnage of 250,800 tons, will feature eight neighborhoods and a wide range of recreational offerings. Among the attractions are Crown's Edge, a skywalk and zipline experience suspended 154 feet above the ocean according to English-language sources, equivalent to about 47 meters according to Royal Caribbean's Spanish-language version, and Category 6, described as the largest water park at sea.
Pools, Dining, and Accommodations
The ship will add nine pools, including the new Coconut Cove and the adults-only area The Hideaway, which will include two pools and the largest pool bar at sea. The dining lineup includes 28 venues, such as the Orleans Parrish Supper Club and the immersive experience Royal Railway – Hero Station, as well as a new space for hands-on cooking classes. In terms of accommodations, the ship will introduce the Ultimate Family Treehouse, a three-deck structure with a rooftop terrace, a hot tub, and a two-story teen zone.
Itineraries from Miami
The Hero of the Seas will operate seven-night cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean from Miami, with each itinerary including a stop at Perfect Day CocoCay in The Bahamas. Passengers will be able to choose Western Caribbean destinations such as Cozumel, Mexico, and Roatán, Honduras, or Eastern Caribbean destinations such as Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, and Philipsburg, St. Maarten.
