Royal Wagenborg held the christening and launch of the Abelina Wagenborg, the first vessel of a new generation of multi-fuel cargo ships, at the Dutch shipyard Royal Niestern Sander. The ceremony was attended by godmothers Jeannette Wagenborg, Aletta Wagenborg and Jacqueline Vuursteen, who officially named the vessel before she was launched into the water.
Seventh EasyMax, first of a new generation
The Abelina Wagenborg is the seventh vessel in Wagenborg's EasyMax series, but the first belonging to the new EasyMax 2.0 generation, which builds on the operational experience of the earlier units to achieve greater efficiency. The vessel ranks first in the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and was built to run on alternative fuels such as methanol, ammonia and LNG.
Flexibility amid the energy transition
According to the company, this fuel flexibility is key in a shipping market undergoing transition, since rather than committing to a single solution, the vessel was designed to adapt as technologies, fuels and market demands evolve.
The origin of the name
The vessel's name harks back to the brand's origins: Abelina was the wife of Egbert Wagenborg, the company's founder, with whom she laid the foundations of the current business. When the first EasyMax was christened in 2017, it was named precisely Egbert Wagenborg.
According to Manifold Times, the christening and launch took place on Thursday, October 8, at the Royal Niestern Sander shipyard, while other sources reported the event on October 9.
